Lyman Hall Chapter
of the Sons of the American
Revolution
In 1985, nineteen descendants of veterans of
the American Revolution petitioned the Board
of Managers of the Georgia Society of the
Sons of the American Revolution to allow them
to establish a chapter in Gainesville,
Georgia. The chapter would be named for Dr.
Lyman Hall. a native New Englander, who came
to Georgia, settled at Midway and became one
of Georgia's first representatives to the
Continental Congress and one of three
Georgians to sign the Declaration of
Independence. He later served as Governor of
Georgia and worked with Abraham Baldwin to
get the General Assembly of Georgia to
charter the first state university in
America.
On July 20, 1985, the Board of Managers of
the GASSAR approved the application for the
charter. The organizational meeting was held
at the Chattahoochee Country Club, September
28, 1985. At that time the charter was
presented by James Westlake, and the charter
members signed the charter. George W. Porter
was chosen President, and the other officers
were elected and installed. At that time the
United States and SAR flags, along with the
SAR Blue Book were given to the
chapter.
The Chapter now has over 50
members
